Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an immigrant / expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.
Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!
In this episode we welcome you to join us in early summer time as we are given a tour around a bargain farm house, which is for sale, in a rural mountain village in central Portugal.
We begin by walking up the long private dirt track, which gives fantastic access to the farm. Lined with trees and a beautiful granite stone wall and a lovely, large iron gateway, which is the entrance to this wonderful farm. This is where we begin the virtual tour by introducing ourselves as we explain the location of this wonderful gem of a farm and a little about the surroundings and local amenities.
As we enter the gateway Mariana talks about the long driveway and says that she saw a bunch of little rabbits when we arrived, they all quickly scarpered into the undergrowth when they saw us. I talk a little about why the farm has been abandoned for so long and then about how one could go about installing calçadas as a driveway to the farmhouse, I speak about the pricing of this too whilst on the way to the ruin.
Once we discussed the house a while I decided to take a short walk around some of the land, whilst walking down the lands sloping hills we talk about the nearby villages and what they have to offer. Sao Fiel can be seen not too far away and the church steeple sits above the village in a beautiful fashion. There are public swimming baths in that village and it is a short walk away. Soalheira boasts numerous amenities, namely a school, restaurants, fire station, police station, cafes, mini markets and more!
Next we head back off to our own farm, via a café for an ice cold drink, as it really has warmed up now. Upon arriving at our farm it was lunchtime already, so we fired up the BBQ and cooked a couple of beautiful rosefish in an oriental sauce, a truly beautiful recipe!
After lunch I took a stroll up to the sheep barn, where I take a peek at our beautiful ewes who just had their wool shorn off last week and they are looking rather dashing indeed. Then once entering the barn we take a look at our pigeon loft, where we see yet another new little squab, pigeons really reproduce quickly and it is quite evident that they will be a fantastic addition to the homestead!
Have an amazing week everybody and I look forward to seeing you all again next week!
